Kuala Lumpur’s very own bartender, Jason Dennis Dcruz, has made history by winning the coveted 2024 Heineken Global Draught Championship in Amsterdam, Netherlands. This prestigious competition, part of Heineken’s renowned Star Quality programme, marked its grand return after a four-year hiatus, bringing together the finest bartenders from around the world. Jason’s remarkable victory is a testament to the exceptional talent rising from Malaysia’s vibrant hospitality scene.
Jason’s journey to global recognition began in 2017 when he started working as a waiter. Over the years, his passion for the hospitality industry propelled him to the role of Assistant Group Bar Manager at The Olive Tree Group. His dedication to the craft led him to join HEINEKEN Malaysia’s Star Academy Programme earlier this year.
In September 2024, Jason outshone over 1,300 bartenders in Malaysia, clinching the National Champion title and securing his spot at the Heineken Global Draught Championship in Amsterdam. There, he competed against 13 of the world’s top bartenders, each representing their respective countries. Jason’s flawless performance and precision poured out in every round, earning him the championship crown and bringing it back to Malaysia.
A Platform for Talent
HEINEKEN Malaysia’s Star Academy Programme played a pivotal role in shaping Jason’s career. Through this annual initiative, more than 10,000 bartenders across Malaysia have received comprehensive training over the years. The programme covers a range of crucial skills, from mastering the art of the perfect pour to responsible serving and customer engagement.
“At HEINEKEN Malaysia, we see the incredible potential in the local hospitality industry and are committed to nurturing and developing talent through our Star Academy programme.” Martijn van Keulen, Managing Director of HEINEKEN Malaysia said. “Jason’s remarkable achievement demonstrates the high standards and exceptional skills present in the country’s hospitality industry. His dedication to the craft is an inspiration to us all” he added.
Jason’s success is also a reflection of the depth and dynamism of Malaysia’s approach to the Star Academy, which stands out globally for its emphasis on technical precision and customer engagement.
Jason’s victory was also celebrated by his colleagues at The Olive Tree Group, where he works as Assistant Group Bar Manager. Leslie Gomez, Managing Director of The Olive Tree Group, expressed immense pride in Jason’s accomplishment, stating, “Teamwork makes the dream work! We’re all so proud of Jason’s achievement here at The Olive Tree Group. His dedication and passion really show how much talent is growing in Malaysia’s bartending scene.”
Leslie also credited HEINEKEN Malaysia for providing platforms like the Star Academy Programme, which continue to elevate the standards of the bartending industry in Malaysia.
Inspiring the Future of Malaysian Bartenders
Jason’s success is not just a personal victory; it represents a larger movement within Malaysia’s bartending scene, one that continues to grow and gain international recognition. The Star Academy Programme remains a vital resource for aspiring bartenders, offering training, mentorship, and opportunities to refine skills and build careers in the competitive world of hospitality.
“The journey was not easy, but every challenge taught me something invaluable.” Jason said reflecting on his win, “I am incredibly grateful for this opportunity and proud to have represented the region on the global stage. This win is not just mine — it is a reflection of everyone who supported me through the Star Academy programme.”
As HEINEKEN Malaysia looks toward the future, the company invites bar partners to register for the next cycle of the Star Academy Programme, opening after May 2025. Jason’s triumph stands as an inspiration to all, showing what can be achieved with dedication, mentorship, and the right opportunities.
