World Bachata Festival Kuala Lumpur marks milestone 16th edition

Marking 16 years, the World Bachata Festival KL returns Nov 27-29 at Saloma KL, uniting over 800 dancers from 30+ nations on a global stage.

What began in 2010 with a modest gathering of roughly 320 dancers has steadily transformed into one of the most recognized Latin dance celebrations in Asia. This November, the World Bachata Festival Kuala Lumpur (WBFKL) marks its 16th anniversary, continuing an extraordinary journey that has placed Malaysia firmly on the global Bachata map.

Returning from 27 to 29 November 2026 at Saloma Kuala Lumpur, the milestone edition reflects sixteen years of resilience, cultural exchange, and artistic growth. Over its history, the festival has grown to attract more than 800 participants from over 30 countries, hosting more than 200 local and international artists. Its core mission remains as clear today as it was at its founding: providing Malaysian dancers access to international-level education without having to travel overseas, while showcasing Kuala Lumpur as a welcoming destination for cultural tourism.

From grassroots passion to a global stage

The story of the festival is deeply connected to the local dance community. Founder Liitha Krishnan first discovered her passion for Salsa and Latin dance at Havana Estudio, where the encouragement, friendships, and inspiration she found became the bedrock of the festival’s vision. Driven to create opportunities for local dancers, instructors, and performers, she built a platform focused on education and genuine personal growth.

Over the years, hundreds of Malaysian performers, instructors, and DJs have shared stages with globally acclaimed talent, inspiring many to elevate their craft. Past editions have welcomed prominent international Bachata stars and live performers, including Mr. Don, Vinny Rivera, Esme, and Chris Paradise, cementing the festival’s reputation for premier entertainment.

A legacy powered by community collaboration

Despite changing times and ongoing challenges across the events industry, the festival’s longevity reflects the dedication of a close-knit movement. Dance schools throughout Kuala Lumpur and Malaysia have continually rallied behind the initiative through collaboration, participation, promotion, and mutual encouragement.

“While I am proud of what World Bachata Festival Kuala Lumpur has achieved over the last sixteen years, this pride belongs to the entire dance community,” said Liitha.

“This festival was never built by one person. It belongs to every dance school, every instructor, every artist, every DJ, every supporter, and every dancer who believed in the vision. Together, we created something bigger than ourselves. We created a community.”

That communal backbone extends to long-standing team members who have worked tirelessly behind the scenes. Co-organizer Kalnish Schubert has played an instrumental role managing artist coordination, registrations, and logistics, supported by early believers Nigel and Shilton Schubert. Veteran supporters Bani Alagesu and Rachel Rayer provided crucial moral support through difficult periods by regularly affirming: “Don’t worry. We know you can do this.” Alongside visual storytelling by long-time photographer Jeff Lee, event production support from Jethro, and signature sets by DJ Gary Theseira, DJ Harry Ang, and DJ Selva, the festival’s spirit has stayed vibrant.

What to expect at Saloma Kuala Lumpur

As the festival gears up for its 2026 return, participants can look forward to an energetic celebration featuring workshops, social dancing, and international showcases. Among the featured headliners this year is artist Evely, who will take the stage alongside a dynamic lineup of local and regional dancers.

Operating out of Saloma Kuala Lumpur, the three-day gathering invites seasoned social dancers, dance students, and curious newcomers alike to immerse themselves in Latin rhythm, movement, and cross-cultural camaraderie. Sixteen years on, the festival remains dedicated to connecting people through dance, culture, and music while continuing to inspire future generations of dancers across Malaysia and beyond.
