Garmin, Reef Check partnership removes 755kg of ocean waste

Garmin Malaysia and Reef Check Malaysia removed 755kg of ghost nets, empowering communities and upcycling waste into eco-friendly products.

Garmin Malaysia, in collaboration with Reef Check Malaysia, has successfully concluded an impactful marine conservation initiative aimed at removing ghost nets from Malaysian waters.

Conducted from March to September 2024, the project exceeded all expectations, removing 755 kilograms of ghost nets—far surpassing the initial target of 100 kilograms. This milestone not only highlights the power of community-driven conservation but also underscores the critical need for sustained efforts to protect the country’s marine ecosystems.

“Garmin has always been committed to sustainability, and this commitment is reflected in our mission, vision, and values,” said Sheena Sim, Marketing Lead for Garmin Malaysia. She emphasized that the partnership with Reef Check Malaysia aligns seamlessly with Garmin’s values, adding, “Through this collaboration, we aim to inspire our community to engage in practices that safeguard our environment for future generations.”

Empowering Communities for Long-Term Conservation

Central to the success of the initiative was the active involvement of local islanders across Pulau Besar, Pulau Aur, Pulau Pemanggil, Pulau Sibu, and Pulau Tinggi. Reef Check Malaysia provided training to 10 local islanders in underwater clean-up operations, equipping them with the skills to take on a more active role in marine conservation.

Julian Hyde, Chief Executive Officer of Reef Check Malaysia, noted the importance of community participation. “The collaboration with Garmin Malaysia brings funding to the island teams, and helps us grow their capacity to build the necessary skills needed to protect the ecosystem, while raising more awareness on the importance of marine conservation to the locals. We had 10 additional volunteers to help us, so that’s a huge multiplier effect instead of the usual four volunteers. This enhances the effect that our small team can have in dealing with multiple marine conservation problems – not just ghost nets, but other challenges.,” Hyde said.

The engagement of these islanders has fostered a deeper understanding of the threats faced by marine ecosystems, creating a ripple effect of awareness and responsibility that extends beyond the immediate community.

Innovative Upcycling: Turning Waste into Value

Beyond ghost net removal, Garmin Malaysia introduced a groundbreaking approach to sustainability by upcycling the collected materials into functional and fashionable products. Partnering with The Sea Monkey Project, a local social enterprise, Garmin transformed the nets into sleek clutches designed to complement their Descent G1 Solar – Ocean Edition wearable. This dive-focused device, crafted from recycled ocean-bound plastic, reflects Garmin’s commitment to environmental responsibility.

“We are always happy to hear from like minded people who recognise the importance of sustainability and value the opportunities available through upcycling,” said Carlos Steenland, Co-Founder of The Sea Monkey Project.

He highlighted the broader impact of the collaboration, stating, “It’s especially exciting when a global brand like Garmin approaches us to collaborate because we can scale up our efforts for greater positive social and environmental impacts together, essentially advancing the upcycling industry and network throughout Malaysia.”

Future Collaborations to Sustain Marine Ecosystems

As the initiative concludes, both Garmin Malaysia and Reef Check Malaysia expressed optimism for continuing their partnership to further bolster marine conservation efforts.

“We’re optimistic that this is just the beginning, and we’re keeping the door open for discussions on how we might expand our efforts together. Ultimately, our goal is to continue contributing to the protection of Malaysia’s marine ecosystems, and we look forward to seeing where this partnership can take us,” Sim remarked.

The success of this project not only reflects the effectiveness of strategic partnerships but also serves as a call to action for corporations, NGOs, and communities to work together in addressing environmental challenges. Garmin Malaysia’s efforts, from financial pledges to innovative upcycling, exemplify a holistic approach to sustainability that has set a benchmark for future conservation initiatives.
