The Asia Pacific University of Technology & Innovation (APU) has been recognised for its dedication to animal welfare, with 17 students receiving accolades from DYMM Tengku Permaisuri Selangor, Tengku Permaisuri Hajah Norashikin, the Royal Patron of Stray Free Selangor.
The ceremony, held on 26 October 2024 at the SPCA headquarters in Ampang, coincided with World Animal Day and highlighted APU’s continued commitment to social responsibility.
APU’s Chief Operating Officer, Gurpardeep Singh, and Lecturer Abbhirami Sivarajan joined the students at the event, which also saw SPCA Chairman Christine Chin in attendance.
This honour reflects APU’s enduring partnership with SPCA and its students’ proactive involvement in meaningful volunteer work.
APU’s long-standing collaboration with SPCA
Since 2016, APU has collaborated with SPCA to engage its Foundation Programme students in impactful volunteer initiatives.
In 2024 alone, 150 new students participated in SPCA programmes, showcasing APU’s dedication to fostering community service.
The university also donated RM10,000 to support SPCA’s neutering programme under the Stray Free Selangor initiative, led by Tengku Permaisuri Selangor.
This initiative aims to reduce stray animal populations through sustainable and ethical practices.
Gurpardeep Singh highlighted the significance of this partnership, stating, “Our collaboration with SPCA has been instrumental in shaping our students into compassionate and socially responsible individuals.
By contributing to a vital cause, they gain invaluable life lessons that prepare them for their personal and professional futures.”
Making an impact through volunteer work
APU students also played a crucial role in SPCA’s “Potong Royong” initiative, held from 9–15 December 2024 at Dewan Liparis in Kota Kemuning, Selangor.
This programme provides free neutering services for cats and dogs, aiming to address the growing stray population.
Volunteers assisted with sterilising surgical equipment, registering participants, caring for animals, and supporting event operations. Their dedication was pivotal in ensuring the programme’s success.
Reflecting on the students’ efforts, SPCA Chairman Christine Chin said, “The commitment shown by APU students underscores the importance of community partnerships.
Their support has significantly contributed to the success of our initiatives and the welfare of countless animals.”
The recognition from Tengku Permaisuri Selangor affirms APU’s mission to nurture graduates who are not only academically accomplished but also socially responsible.
The university’s focus on character development ensures its students actively contribute to building a compassionate society.
Through initiatives like these, APU continues to lead by example, proving that community engagement and education go hand in hand.
