On December 30, 2024, Penang International Airport warmly welcomed the inaugural flight of Loong Air’s new Xi’an-Penang route, a significant step in fostering closer ties between Malaysia and China. The service, operating twice weekly on Mondays and Fridays using a 168-seater Airbus A320, marked the airline’s commitment to expanding its international network while enhancing Malaysia’s appeal as a prime destination for Chinese tourists.
The event was graced by notable figures, including Tourism Malaysia Deputy Chairperson Yeoh Soon Hin, Director-General Datuk Manoharan Periasamy, and China’s Vice-Consul-General in Penang, Madam Ding Qiao. Representatives from Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad, Ground Team Red Sdn Bhd (GTR), Loong Air, Penang’s state government, and members of the media were also in attendance.
“This new route exemplifies Loong Air’s international growth strategy,” Yeoh expressed the significance of this launch, stating, “It also reaffirms Malaysia’s position as a top choice for Chinese tourists, particularly those from northern China.”
Strengthening Tourism and Economic Growth
The new route is poised to contribute significantly to Malaysia’s tourism and economic landscape, aligning with the objectives of Visit Malaysia Year 2026. Chinese tourist arrivals in Malaysia experienced a meteoric rise in 2024, exceeding 3 million visitors—a staggering 132.7% increase compared to the previous year.
Tourism Malaysia attributes this success to strategic initiatives such as visa-free travel for Chinese nationals, which has been extended until December 31, 2026, and enhanced air connectivity. These measures have cemented Malaysia’s reputation as a welcoming and accessible destination.
Loong Air’s Xi’an-Penang service is expected to boost bilateral cultural exchange, offering travelers from northern China direct access to Penang’s rich heritage, culinary delights, and scenic attractions. Conversely, Malaysian travelers will find easier connectivity to Xi’an, a city steeped in history as the starting point of the Silk Road and home to the world-renowned Terracotta Army.
With the launch of this route, Malaysia continues to solidify its preparations for Visit Malaysia Year 2026, an ambitious campaign aimed at attracting 23.5 million international tourists and generating RM76.8 billion in tourism receipts. The Xi’an-Penang connection adds to a growing list of direct flights that position Malaysia as a key destination for global travelers.
