Dasha Logan releases EP ‘Legasi’ as a tribute to Alleycats

Dasha Logan’s Legasi EP reimagines Alleycats classics, honoring her father Datuk Loganathan’s legacy while inspiring a new generation of music lovers.

In a heartfelt tribute to the legendary Malaysian band Alleycats, singer-songwriter Dasha Logan has unveiled an extended play (EP) titled Legasi. Available on major streaming platforms, the EP features five reimagined classics from the Alleycats’ illustrious catalogue. Dasha, 37, is the daughter of the late Datuk Loganathan Arumugam, one of the band’s co-founders, and the EP represents her way of keeping the band’s legacy alive for future generations.

“Besides honouring my father, Legasi is my way of introducing a whole new generation of Malaysian music lovers to the music of the fantastic band he was part of,” Dasha said during the launch of the EP at Vox KL, Naza Tower, KLCC. She added, “The idea behind Legasi came to me before the Movement Control Order (MCO) in 2020, and the first person I discussed this with was my uncle Datuk David Arumugam.”

A Family Collaboration

Supported by funding from MyCreative Ventures Sdn Bhd under the DKK Dana Kebolehanpasaran programme, Legasi marks a special collaboration between Dasha and her uncle, Datuk David Arumugam, the iconic lead singer of Alleycats. David, now 73, lent his voice to the EP, joining Dasha in a duet for the song Jika Kau Bercinta Lagi.

“There are no words to describe how it feels to finally announce this project. All I can say is that it is an honour to work with this amazing man and sing such amazing songs by him and my father,” Dasha shared. “What is important is that the new versions of the songs must stay true to the sound of their originals and should not be changed too much.”

The recording process for the EP was completed in just one day in a Kuala Lumpur studio, while the music video for the duet took another day to film. The album was produced by Rozhan Razman, with the song selections carefully curated to include Loganathan’s favourites: Jika Kau Bercinta Lagi, Senandung Semalam, Seribu Bintang, Andainya Aku Pergi Dulu, and Sampaikanlah Salam.

Preserving the Alleycats’ Timeless Sound

Formed in 1969, the Alleycats rose to prominence in the late 1970s, becoming one of Malaysia’s most beloved pop bands. Co-founded by Loganathan and David Arumugam, the band’s music continues to resonate deeply with fans. For Dasha, Legasi is both a personal and professional milestone, representing her commitment to preserving and celebrating the Alleycats’ timeless sound.

“It carries the message that as a singer, I inherit my father’s and my uncle’s illustrious legacy, and no matter which direction in music I take, I never forget my roots,” Dasha explained. The title Legasi was suggested by her longtime friend and music producer Jennifer Thompson, a name that Dasha felt perfectly encapsulated the spirit of the project.

Inspiring a New Generation

Through Legasi, Dasha hopes to inspire the younger generation to appreciate and embrace the Alleycats’ music. She aims to “breathe fresh air” into as many Alleycats songs as possible in the coming years, while expressing gratitude to MyCreative Ventures for their support in making the project a reality.

Eighteen years after Loganathan’s untimely passing at the age of 53, Dasha’s tribute is a touching reminder of the band’s enduring impact on Malaysian music and culture. With Legasi, she invites listeners to rediscover the melodies that have stood the test of time, ensuring that the Alleycats’ legacy continues to inspire for generations to come.
