Chinatown rings in the Lunar New Year with community spirit

Chinatown, Kuala Lumpur, celebrated the Lunar New Year with unity, volunteerism, and cultural significance, marking everyone’s birthday.

On February 4, 2025, a vibrant celebration ushered in the Lunar New Year at Chinatown, Kuala Lumpur, as the Chinatown Civil Defence Auxiliary Unit (CDA BNM) in collaboration with the Chinatown Rukun Tetangga (Neighbourhood Watch) Program hosted a festive gathering. The event, held at Jalan Petaling, welcomed residents, tourists, and dignitaries alike to celebrate the Year of the Dragon in a show of unity and community spirit.

The gathering was officially opened by YB Senator Saraswathy Kandasami, the Deputy Minister of National Unity, representing Minister Aaron Ago Dagang. In her speech, Saraswathy emphasized the government’s ongoing efforts to foster community cohesion through initiatives like the Progressive Rukun Tetangga Program. This program encourages volunteerism, supports community development, and implements economic projects that benefit all Malaysians, particularly in strengthening ties among diverse groups. Her presence at the event reinforced the government’s commitment to improving social harmony across Malaysia.

Saraswathy’s remarks also highlighted how such initiatives empower local communities, enabling them to participate actively in shaping their environments, promoting safety, and cultivating economic opportunities. The event served as a testament to the importance of building a cohesive society through mutual respect and volunteer-driven actions.

Festive Activities

In keeping with tradition, the event was marked by a Loh Sang (prosperity toss) ceremony, held under the iconic Chinatown arch. The symbolic tossing of the dish by attendees is a Chinese New Year custom believed to bring prosperity, harmony, and unity. The crowd cheered as the dish was tossed high, with wishes for a successful and prosperous year ahead.

In addition to the ceremonial toss, guests were treated to the distribution of mandarin oranges, symbolizing good fortune, and red packets, or ang pau, containing gifts to mark the occasion. These traditional practices reinforced the festive atmosphere and reminded everyone of the significance of sharing joy and goodwill during the Lunar New Year.

The event also saw the official appointment of three new advisors to the Chinatown Civil Defence Auxiliary Unit. These individuals, who were recognized in a formal Certificate of Appointment ceremony before the festivities began, will play an essential role in guiding the unit’s operations and enhancing community safety. The newly appointed advisors are Dato’ Seri Tan Choon Hwa (Chief Advisor), Dato’ Dr. Tock Min Kin and Dato’ Dr. Kenny Siang.

    Their leadership will be crucial in advancing the mission of the Civil Defence Auxiliary Unit, which focuses on disaster preparedness, emergency response, and building a resilient, united Chinatown community. The new advisors are set to strengthen the unit’s efforts in promoting volunteerism and enhancing public safety throughout the year.

    Honoring Supporters and Partners of the Event

    The event was also graced by the presence of key figures from various organizations. Among them were Dato’ Seri Hasnul, Secretary-General of the Ministry of National Unity, Dato’ Haji Che Roslan, Director-General of the Department of National Unity and Integration, and Tuan OCS HS Lee Insp Shukri, who represented the Deputy Police Chief, YDH Dato’ Azry Akmar. Their participation underscored the importance of collaboration between government bodies, law enforcement, and local organizations in fostering a harmonious and secure environment.

    The festivities culminated with a spectacular fireworks display that lit up the night sky, symbolizing the beginning of a promising new year filled with joy, unity, and shared prosperity.
