INTERFEL showcases sustainable French apples

INTERFEL brings sustainable French apples to Malaysia, showcasing resilience amid climate challenges through engaging events and premium-quality produce.

Malaysia’s fruit lovers are once again enjoying the exquisite taste of French apples as INTERFEL (the Interbranch Association for Fresh French Fruit and Vegetables) makes a successful return to the country. Despite global climate challenges, France remains a stronghold of apple production, with over 100 different varieties thriving in its fertile soil and unique climate.

Europe’s apple production has faced significant challenges in recent years, with the 2024 harvest being the second-lowest in the century, producing only 10.2 million tons due to severe frost in Eastern Europe. In contrast, France has maintained a relatively stable yield of 1.4 million tons— a slight decrease from 2023 but in line with its three-year average. This resilience showcases the effectiveness of French apple cultivation methods, ensuring a steady supply of high-quality apples despite environmental adversities.

Diverse Apple Varieties

The production outlook for French apple varieties in 2024 highlights a mixed trend. Popular varieties such as Golden and Gala saw an increase in yield by 8% and 1%, respectively. However, others, including Granny Smith and Fuji, faced a decline of 26-30%. Additionally, Pink Lady, France’s third-largest variety, recorded a 10% drop to 154,000 tons, while Jazz saw a 19% decrease in production.

These fluctuations underscore the ongoing challenges faced by apple growers, yet French apples remain widely available in Malaysia. Consumers can find them in major retail chains such as AEON, Lotus, Econsave, and Jaya Grocer until March 2025, ensuring continued access to these premium fruits.

Sustainability at the Core

For over 25 years, French apple growers have embraced sustainable agricultural practices to ensure long-term viability. Methods such as precision irrigation, advanced soil management, and environmentally friendly pest control have been instrumental in maintaining apple quality while minimizing ecological impact. These initiatives contribute to a more resilient apple industry that prioritizes both environmental preservation and consumer health.

INTERFEL’s dedication to sustainability extends beyond cultivation. The association actively promotes responsible farming through awareness campaigns and community engagement, reinforcing its commitment to high-quality, eco-friendly apple production.

French Apple Culinary Experiences

To deepen Malaysian consumers’ connection with French apples, INTERFEL hosted a series of engaging events between December 2024 and March 2025. Activities included a French Apple Kombucha Workshop for influencers, a consumer roadshow, and in-store samplings at major supermarkets. These events successfully introduced diverse ways to enjoy French apples while emphasizing their sustainability and health benefits.

The workshop saw participation from 20 local influencers, while thousands of consumers enjoyed the in-store samplings and interactive roadshow activities. These efforts not only strengthened the presence of French apples in Malaysia but also reinforced their versatility in culinary applications. INTERFEL remains committed to expanding these initiatives, ensuring that French apples continue to be a staple in Malaysian households.
