Myanmar earthquake triggers urgent appeal for aid

World Vision Malaysia has launched an emergency fundraising appeal following a devastating 7.7-magnitude earthquake that struck central Myanmar on March 28.

The disaster has claimed over 1,000 lives and caused widespread destruction to homes, hospitals, and infrastructure.

The powerful quake hit at 12:50 PM local time at a shallow depth of 10km, triggering a 6.4-magnitude aftershock.

More than 7.3 million people were exposed to severe shaking, with Mandalay and Naypyidaw among the worst-hit areas.

Thousands are now homeless, including children who have lost safe spaces and schools.

Widespread damage and humanitarian crisis

The earthquake has left entire communities in ruins, with emergency services struggling to reach those in need.

Reports indicate that many hospitals have suffered structural damage, limiting access to urgent medical care.

Airports and transport routes have also been affected, making relief efforts even more challenging.

World Vision Malaysia is mobilising relief efforts for 500,000 affected people, aiming to raise a total of USD 5 million (over RM 22 million) to provide essential aid.

Immediate priorities include temporary shelter, clean water, food supplies, and basic relief items.

“Children are terrified, many sleeping outdoors amid ongoing tremors. This disaster will require sustained support as families face months of hardship,” said Dr. Kyi Minn, World Vision Myanmar National Director.

“We urge Malaysians to stand with Myanmar’s children in this desperate hour.”
