VISTA Eye Specialist, in partnership with Tzu Chi Malaysia, has launched its second 100 Cataract Surgery Programme, a vital initiative to restore sight for underprivileged communities in the Klang Valley.
Starting 21 April 2025, this four-month effort targets 100 patients, offering free cataract surgeries and post-operative care.
VISTA’s collaboration with Tzu Chi underscores a shared commitment to accessible eye care, addressing preventable blindness caused by cataracts.
By transforming lives through vision restoration, VISTA and Tzu Chi empower individuals to regain independence and reconnect with their families, strengthening community bonds and fostering hope across Malaysia.
VISTA and Tzu Chi’s visionary partnership
Cataracts, a leading cause of preventable blindness, often go untreated in low-income areas due to cost and access barriers.
VISTA provides surgical expertise, while Tzu Chi identifies and screens patients, ensuring those in need receive care.
The programme, which began screening on 16 March 2025, assessed 116 patients, confirming 52 for surgery.
Dr Mohd Ishaq Bin Abdul Hakim, VISTA’s lead ophthalmologist, emphasized the deeper impact.
“Restoring sight helps patients see their families and regain independence,” he said.
“This gives our work profound meaning.”
VISTA’s team, including Dr Vienne Tai Pih Yih and Dr Paul Lim Chern Pin, will perform the surgeries.
Patients like Letchumy, a tea server, shared her struggle.
“I want to see my daughter, who had a stroke, to care for her,” she said.
Sumathy, living without electricity, added, “I need my sight to care for my husband and face our future.”
Their stories highlight the programme’s transformative power.
Tzu Chi’s Herbert Chan underscored the mission.
“Every restored vision renews hope and dignity,” he said.
Tzu Chi volunteers manage logistics and provide compassionate support, ensuring a seamless experience.
VISTA volunteers assist with screenings and coordination, enhancing efficiency.
A second screening round, supported by UCSI University’s Dr Teoh Swee Chai and 13 optometry students, will complete the 100-surgery goal.
