Tucked inside the BU3 Community Centre in Bandar Utama, the Perpustakaan Komuniti Cawangan Bandar Utama is quietly redefining the role of a neighbourhood library. What began as a modest municipal facility has evolved into a cherished space for learning, leisure, and connection for the residents of DUN Bandar Utama (N36). With cool air-conditioning, friendly staff, and modern amenities, the library has become a go-to refuge for students, retirees, families, and freelancers alike.
A purposeful space for all ages
Officially launched on May 27, 2023, by then Petaling Jaya Mayor YBhg Tuan Mohammad Azhan Md Amir, the BU3 Library was envisioned as more than a traditional repository of books. It was created to be a warm, inclusive hub where lifelong learning could flourish and community spirit could thrive.
Part of the larger BU3 Community Centre, the library sits beside facilities such as badminton and tennis courts, a rooftop-covered basketball court, a football field, and local council offices. These shared spaces encourage intergenerational engagement — it’s not uncommon to see grandparents leafing through novels while their grandchildren play sports next door. With the recent addition of an AED (Automated External Defibrillator) donated by the Rotary Club of Bandar Utama, the centre has further cemented its role as a safe and accessible place for all.
Modern facilities with an inclusive touch
Serving an estimated 100,000 residents across the township, the library’s layout and services are designed to be welcoming and functional. It features separate reading areas for children and adults, secure WiFi, computer access stations, printing and photocopying services, large restrooms, and free parking — a rare find in Petaling Jaya.
Membership costs are purposefully kept low to encourage access. New sign-ups cost just RM11 with annual renewals at RM5. Seniors and persons with disabilities enjoy free membership, ensuring that cost is never a barrier to entry. Meanwhile, students and freelancers benefit from affordable workspace alternatives, such as plug point usage for RM2/day and computer rentals at RM1/hour. Additional service charges, like RM0.30 per photocopied page and a modest RM10 card replacement fee, are clearly communicated to maintain transparency.
Fostering connection
While the facilities are impressive, it’s the atmosphere of warmth and community that makes the BU3 Library stand out. On any given day, one might see toddlers curled up with picture books, teenagers collaborating on group projects, or retirees rediscovering their love of reading. Volunteers often assist newcomers with digital tools, creating a low-pressure space for everyone to learn and grow.
In the sweltering heat of recent weeks, the library has also become a sanctuary for those simply seeking a cool, quiet place to reflect. As more residents discover the comfort and convenience it offers, the BU3 Library continues to build a sense of shared ownership — proving that even in the digital age, libraries still hold an essential place in community life.
From children’s storytime to quiet contemplation, from printouts to personal connections, the BU3 Library is doing what few public spaces can: bringing people together in meaningful, everyday ways — one reader at a time.
