For students and tech enthusiasts, this victory showcases how young talent can blend tradition with technology, sparking interest in future opportunities.
APU students claimed top honours
APU’s team, comprising Bowie Chong, Cheang Zhi Lin, Ian Chin, and Ritchie Boon, won a Gold Award and the Best Gold Award.
Their project, Ravana Reimagined, impressed at Edu@Innovate 2025, held at Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris from 19-20 May.
The innovation reimagines Wayang Kulit through an AI chatbot. It offers storytelling, quizzes, and a virtual museum, aiming to revive interest among youth.
Also, their mentor, Associate Professor Ts Dr Vinothini Kasinathan, praised the win.
“The audience marvelled as they received the Best Gold Award,” she said, noting VIP admiration.
Next, the project stemmed from curiosity. Bowie’s interest in Ravana, a nuanced figure in Malaysian and Sri Lankan lore, inspired the team’s work for an AI module.
Finally, their effort paid off. Bowie added, “We created fun, educational content, enhancing our teamwork and presentation skills.”
Standing out in innovation
APU’s success highlights its focus on practical learning. As the youngest competitors, the students outperformed postgraduates, reflecting strong training.
Edu@Innovate 2025, endorsed by the Ministry of Education, united global innovators. APU’s win alongside SEPAKAD and the Mini Festival of Ideas boosted its profile.
Also, the project addresses a cultural need. Wayang Kulit’s decline prompted Ravana Reimagined, blending technology with heritage. “APU educational innovation hub” emerges.
