Wesak celebration strengthens community spirit through service

Bandar Utama Buddhist Society’s Wesak 2026 celebration united spiritual practice and community service, promoting compassion, health and fellowship.

The Bandar Utama Buddhist Society (BUBS) marked Wesak 2026 with a celebration that combined spiritual observance with community service, bringing together devotees, community leaders and residents under the theme “Spiritual Friendship, Joyful Service.”

Held at Utama Bodhi Vihara (UBV), the event highlighted the role of Buddhist values in fostering compassion, unity and support within the wider community. The celebration served as a reminder that the practice of the Dhamma extends beyond individual spiritual development and is strengthened through friendship and collective service.

The programme began with a Meal Dana for monastics before proceeding to the official launching ceremony. The ceremony included the singing of the national, state and society anthems, followed by addresses from BUBS President Bro. Lee Siew Thong (John) and Bandar Utama assemblywoman Jamaliah Jamaluddin.

In her speech, Jamaliah expressed appreciation to the BUBS leadership and executive committee for their continued service to the community. She also reaffirmed her office’s commitment to addressing local concerns and working closely with residents.

“Whatever feedback that I’ve received, information that is given to me and my office, or if there’s any issues that we can help to solve or to engage with the Selangor State Government, my office will always be there for everyone, and definitely for the Bandar Utama Buddhist Society,” she said.

The celebration was officially launched with a gong-striking ceremony jointly conducted by Jamaliah and Lee, witnessed by invited guests including Tan Sri Dato’ Dr. CK Teo and Puan Sri. Performances by Dhamma School children and the BuddySings! group followed, adding a festive atmosphere to the occasion.

Service-oriented activities benefit residents

Beyond the formal ceremonies, the event featured a range of programmes designed to benefit the broader community. Following Paritta Chanting led by Forest Tradition monastics, visitors participated in free health screenings conducted by the Ministry of Health and attended a dementia awareness talk delivered by Professor Dr. Tan Maw Pin.

Throughout the day, devotees also made traditional offerings of lights, flowers and incense at the Buddhacetiya Hall, engaging in acts of reflection and devotion.

Founded in 2000, BUBS has grown into a vibrant Buddhist organisation dedicated to Dhamma education, meditation, youth development and charitable initiatives. The completion of Utama Bodhi Vihara in 2009 marked a significant milestone in its development.

As BUBS celebrates its 25th anniversary, the Wesak 2026 gathering reflected the society’s enduring commitment to spiritual growth, volunteerism and community welfare, demonstrating how faith-based organisations can contribute meaningfully to the well-being of society.
