Penang International Sports Arena: A sorry state

The Penang International Sports Arena, PISA, was an air conditioned, indoor sports arena.

Completed in year 2000, it is the largest indoor arena in Penang, in fact the largest in Northern Penisular Malaysia.  It was designed to host conventions, exhibitions and entertainment shows.

At the height of its glory,  PISA had proudly hosted the 2000 SUKMA games,  the Disney’s Mickey Magic show and  bands like Micheal Learns to Rock have performed there, not too long ago.

The arena also hosted the Pikom PC fair,  Matta Fair,  Education Fair,  Home Decoration exhibition, blissful bridal shows, international line dance carnivals and much more.

PISA is owned by the Municipal Council of Penang island (Majlis Perbandaran Pulau Pinang, MPPP) and is managed by Penevents Sdn Bhd.

It is undoubtedly the most impressive event venue in the state… until now.

Recently, citizen journalist Lim Boo Seng, checked out PISA and found it to be in a sorry state of affairs.

The water fountain has stopped functioning, the fountain pool is filled with stagnant water, full of sludge, rubbish and a potential haven for mosquitoes

The Penang state govt launched the “Cleaner, Greener Penang” initiative last year in 2010. It is ironic that an iconic landmark such as PISA, have become such a distasteful condition.

This does not reflect well for the   “Cleaner, Greener Penang”  campaign which the state govt so aggressively trying to promote.
