Jimmy Leow Beng HockA Five-Day ‘Dancing to Connect’ Creative Youth Workshop by New York-based Battery Dance Company – an International cultural diplomacy project – which touches the hearts and minds of youth through dance Dancer and Teaching Artist, Sean Scantlebury of New York-based Battery Dance Company together with Lorna Hoong, a Malaysian dancer from the National Academy of Arts, Culture and Heritage (ASWARA) will be holding a five-day ‘Dancing to Connect’ creative workshop for teens in Penang, hosted by PEARL (Penang Arts Link).
The workshop in Penang has been made possible with support from the Fulbright Specialist program of the U.S Department of State and a grant from the U.S Embassy Kuala Lumpur, with the sponsorship provided by the Whiteaways Arcade and PPB Hartabina Bhd.
‘Dancing to Connect’ is a program that Battery Dance Company has been introducing all around the world as a mean to provide teenagers with the tools for getting in touch with the dancer within and choreographing their own performances.
The workshop aims to engage international youth in creativity and team building through the American art form of modern dance. DtC was launched in Europe in 2006, Asia in 2008 and Africa in 2009. CJ Jimmy Leow spoke to the teaching artist and participants.
