Senior citizens’ happy times

Senior citizens’ happy times

23rd January, 2011 (Sunday) 364 inmates and 48 caretakers from 19 homes were invited by The Kiwanis Club of Johor Bahru to a sumptuous meal at the Grand Straits Garden, Johor Bahru. This is an annual affair in which the club brings cheer to senior citizens from homes in and around JB by inviting them to a luncheon in conjunction with Chinese New Year.

This is a one-stop event where well wishers of Johor Bahru who wish to donate towards these inmates, turned up with red packets and gifts. The senior citizens were entertained by Laughter Yoga leaders from the Johor Bahru Happy and Joyous Club and Edmund Dass who performed with a repertoire of songs. There were also 3 local and 9 China artistes from the 2000 Disco, Taman Pelangi who entertained the inmates. Magic Cut Studio Hair Stylists, a local hair salon, provided hair stylists who cropped the inmates’ hair for free. The crowd was ecstatic with the appearance of the God of Prosperity.

The arrival of the guest of honour, Datuk Ng See Tiong, member of the Dewan Undangan Negeri of Kawasan Parit Yaani, was heralded by a lion dance troupe. The Organising Chairperson was Ms Serena Quek and she thanked all the well wishers and sponsors who helped make the occasion a success.

The oldest inmate who turned up at the function was 91-year old Liew Kee from the Joyce Old folks Home, JB. He was admitted to the home in 2005 and is apparently very happy with his living conditions. He received a souvenir for being the oldest inmate who turned up that day.
