Christina Liew: Ethnic diversity misinterpreted

Lack of understanding on the ethnic diversity in Sabah has made life difficult for the Sabahans when applying for MyKad. The National Registration Department (NRD) has not been very helpful in determining and accepting the religion stated by the applicant.

According to Christina Liew, Sabah PKR Deputy Chief, there are many cases where the religion stated wrongly. One case encountered by her is a Sabahan who has been registered as a muslim. He has been trying to change his religion for the past 10 years with no success.

She hopes the National Registration Department will be more proactive in solving this problem as well as educating the NRD officers on Sabah’s cultural diversity.
