Tan Kai SweeNepal is the only country in the world where Hinduism is the national religion. It was never colonised by the Western powers, and being landlocked between India and China (Tibet) it has remained a potpourri of diversity in traditional customs and practices.
There are at least a dozen ethnic groups speaking some 50 languages. It was one of the world’s last absolute monarchies until 1990 when it became a democracy. More than 80 percent of the population live off the land and poverty is endemic.
Nepal houses eight of the world’s tallest mountains, including Mt Everest and Annapurna, all above the 8000 metre mark. Worldwide only 14 mountains are above the 8000 metre mark.
In March 2010, 11 ordinary Malaysians set out on a 18 day trek round the Annapurna Circuit, reaching 5000 metres altitude. To prepare for the trek they had to train for about 3 months.
One of the trekkers, Ms Arhnue, took these pictures and video with narration using a small pocket-sized automatic Canon powershot camera.
