From this year, individuals and corporations can apply to operate their own Kedai Rakyat IMalaysia (KR1M) as the government targets to open at least 85 such retail outlets nationwide by the year-end.

A statement from the Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Ministry yesterday said that to date, 26 KRIM were in operation.

“The conditions set and application form can be obtained from the ministry’s website at www.kpdnkk.gov.my and from the ministry’s branch offices,” it said.

On the issue of safety of KR1M products, the statement said the ministry had instructed that all the 200 types of foodstuff be sent for laboratory tests and all products to be sold at these outlets must first obtain the approval of the Health Ministry.

It said the ministry had formed special monitoring teams which also comprised officers from the Health Office, Agriculture Department and Islamic Religious Department, besides the ministry’s enforcement officers to check on food products sold at the KR1M.

Up to Dec 31 last year, the 26 KR1M nationwide sold RM12.4 worth of products.

The KR1M sells 250 types of products using the generic brand label, 1Malaysia, as well as Coop 1Malaysia products from Felda.

The 1Malaysia products sold at the KR1M are cheaper by up to 50 per cent compared to those of other brands.
