Sabah Customs seized 2,901 units of mobile phones worth almost RM1 million in a special operation conducted throughout Sabah since Jan 5 until Tuesday night, said its deputy director, Hamzah Sundang.
He said the mobile phones were seized from 126 business premises which were inspected by 56 Customs officials.
“Among the mobile phones seized were those imported from China and Singapore without import permits and approval from SIRIM Berhad,” he told reporters yesterday.
Hamzah said there were also mobile phones already in the market but did not have any SIRIM label or were using fake labels. Meanwhile, he said, Lahad Datu Customs also managed to seize a variety of contraband goods including cigarettes and liquor worth more than RM2.5 million including tax throughout last year.
