Lorong Tikus flea market memorabilia

KUALA LUMPUR – Citizen Journalists Malaysia takes a stroll just behind Jalan Petaling and finds the aptly named back-lane Lorong Tikus (Rat Lane). [VIDEO]

 

Just behind Jalan Petaling is the aptly named back-lane Lorong Tikus (Rat Lane).

The lane is a hype of activity as early as eight in the morning. It has the excitement of hidden surprises.

Everyone knows that Jalan Petaling famous for shopping and bargaining.

However, looking at what is found in Lorong Tikus, it does not seem to lose out in terms of varieties too.

Lorong Tikus is interesting and colourful with the presence of local and foreign peddlers. The local peddlers do not seem to mind having foreign competition, as everyone is trying to make a living.

The peddlers had their goods displayed on mats. The goods range from new products to discarded things, as well as mundane household paraphernalia.

Things seen on display are shoes, clothes, toys, lotions, potions, books, currencies, fish, and electrical and electronic goods.

According to Ah Heng, the peddlers had been around since the Japanese occupation. His father started the business and it was handed down to him.

He said occasionally Dewan Bandaraya Kuala Lumpur (DBKL) or the police would raid the area, and their goods will be confiscated but while the locals can redeem their goods – the foreigners can’t, he told Citizen Journalists Malaysia.

He said he might not be able to buy a big house or a big car from the business, but at least he can make a decent living.

Peddlers were seen packing to leave as early as 10.30 in the morning.
