‘Guru Sangkut’ to ease shortage of teachers in vernacular schools

Due to the shortage of teachers in Chinese and Tamil schools, the Ministry of Education’s Secretary General Rosli Bin Mohameed has decided to recruit  2,267 ‘Guru Sangkut’ (a special term referred to short-term teachers) required between 3/1/2012  to 31/3/2012.

Currently, 1,889 short-term temporary teacher are required in Chinesee primary schools and 378 teachers in Tamil schools nationwide.

The top three states facing the highest shortage in Chinese primary schools are Johor being short of 492 teachers, followed by 442 teachers in Selangor and 201 teachers in Perak.

Tamil primary schools, on the other hand, has 142 teachers short in Perak, followed by 85 teachers in Johor and 52 teachers in Pahang.

The ‘Guru Sangkut’ recruitment had been assigned to the state Education Department and the terms of salary and benefits to be enjoyed during the 3-month period will be the same as the terms for yearly Temporary Teacher’s.

Rosli had order all state Education Departments and related officers to solve the problem before 30-12-2011.

Meanwhile, the 3,548 ‘Guru Sangkut’ were also required in the public secondary schools. Again Johor had the most serious shortage of secondary school teachers amounting to 527, followed by 486 in Sabah and 482 teachers in Selangor.

Dong Zong make a statement against the order of state Education Department in Wilayah Persekutuan to squezze more student into a class to deal with the lack of teachers. This defeats the purpose of having quality education in the nation and increases the workload of the existing teacher schools.
