Shabery: Private sector can help transform Bukit Jalil Sport Complex

The cabinet has approved private sector involvement to transform the Bukit Jalil Sports Complex into the country’s first sports city with the Stadium Board.

The cabinet has approved private sector involvement to transform the Bukit Jalil Sports Complex into the country’s first sports city with the Stadium Board.

Youth and Sports Minister Ahmad Shabery Cheek said previously there was an obstacle in the commercialization process since only the Stadium Board was given the green light to manage the stadium by the Land Office.

“We believe in the era where sports has become an industry, we require stadiums to be more than just a platform for competition. Such venues can be commercialized for sports related activities by building hotels, hospital, shopping complex and other business complexes.

“Currently private sector involvement is difficult because there are provisions like lease period of only 30 years which will turn away investors. But yesterday the cabinet agreed to relax such provisions to allow private sector involvement,” he told reporters after opening the gallery and calendar of events for the Hari Belia Negara 2012 celebrations, yesterday.

The 5-day celebrations would start on May 23 and see the culmination of about two million youths since the number of activities have been increased from 200 last year to 500 this year.
