A total of 117 farmers in Kampung Seneng, Jelawat, who have lost more than RM100,000 due to damage to crops by floods and disease recently have received RM58,500 in compassionate funds.

Each of the farmers received RM500 to help them cultivate padi and fruits in the next season, said Bachok Agriculture Development Council chairman Dr Ilias Hussin.

Much of the crops, such as padi, watermelon, pepper and cucumber, were damaged by the floods and diseases, he told reporters at the presentation of the aid in the village.

Farmer Suhailan Che Man, 46, said he lost RM12,000 when his watermelon crop on two hectares was damaged by excessive rain.

Ibrahim Che Mat, 58, said his off-season padi crop on more than one hectare was destroyed by disease, causing a loss estimated at RM8,000.
