A sum of RM71.2 million was been chanelled to 43,810 single mothers through the Children Aid Scheme (BKK) between January and September this year.
Women, Family and Community Development Minister Shahrizat Abdul Jalil said the scheme, under the Social Welfare Department, was one of the ministry’s many efforts in helping single mothers.
“The scheme, which provides monthly financial assistance of between RM100 and RM450 to each family, is an indication the government was always concerned over the plight and challenges of not only the less fortunate but single mothers, as well,” she said in reply to a question by Senator Ibrahim Kader at the Dewan Negara yesterday.
Syed Ibrahim had wanted to know the types of assistance provided by the government to single mothers. Shahrizat said, besides BKK, the Social Welfare Department also supported several other schemes, including the Federal and State general assistance and grants.
“Apart from the department, the ministry, through its Women Development Department, also provides assistance schemes to eligible single mothers nationwide.
