High risk of floods forecast for Terengganu and Kelantan

There is a high risk of floods in low lying areas in Terengganu and Kelantan following heavy rain spells forecast for Dec 9 and 10.

The Meteorological Department has issued a yellow level warning of intermittent rains and occasionally moderate, in both the states.

The affected areas are Tumpat, Kota Bharu, Bachok, Pasir Puteh, Machang and Pasir Mas in Kelantan, and Besut, Setiu and Kuala Terengganu in Terengganu.

In a statement today, the department also issued a third category strong winds and rough seas warning for the waters of Pahang, East Johor, Sarawak, Tioman, Bunguran, Condore, Reef North, Reef South and Layang-Layang with wind speeds of up to 60 kph and wave height of 5.5 metres.

The conditions, which are expected to continue until Nov 13, pose a danger to all coastal and shipping activities including oil rigs.

A second category strong winds and rough seas warning with wind speeds of up to 50 – 60 kph and wave heights of 4.5 metres was also issued for the waters of Kelantan, Terengganu, Labuan and for the interior, west coast and Kudat in Sabah, and Samui and Palawan, dangerous for all coastal and shipping activities including fishing and ferry services.
