Floods worsen in Terengganu and Kelantan

The flood situation in Terengganu and Kelantan has worsened overnight, with the number of evacuees in the two states rising to 3,457 compared to 1,712 last night.

Some 2,672 people have been evacuated in Terengganu and 785 in Kelantan by this morning.

In TERENGGANU, State Security Council assistant secretary (information) Ahmad Redza Arshad said the Setiu and Besut districts were the worst affected.

The number of evacuees in Setiu has risen to 1,510 from 829 and in Besut to 940 from 365. The number of evacuees in the Hulu Terengganu district has gone up to 211 from 105 yesterday evening while in Marang 11 people have moved out of their homes.

The Drainage and Irrigation Department reported that rivers in many areas were swollen and the level of some have exceeded the alert and warning points.

A spokesman said the level of the Besut River at the Jertih bridge was 9.02 metres, higher than the warning level of 8.9 metres, and at Kampung La it was at the alert point of 18.28  metres.

The level of the Setiu River has breached the danger point at several places. At the Permaisuri bridge, it was 8.95 metres (danger point 8.9 metres), at Kampung Langkap 21.77 metres (21 metres) and Kampung Bukit 13.98 metres (12 metres).

The weather was fine this morning in Kuala Terengganu.

In KELANTAN, 785 people were at relief centres as at 8 am compared to 416 last night.

A spokesman of the state flood operations room said Kuala Krai was the sixth district to be affected, and 35 people there have been evacuated to two relief centres.

In the Kota Baharu district, 306 people have been moved to three relief centres, he said, adding that Machang district had 101 evacuees at three relief centres, Pasir Mas 197 evacuees at five centres, Pasir Puteh 21 people at one centre and Tanah Merah 125  evacuees at four centres.

The spokesman said that as at 8 am, the level of the Golok River in Rantau Panjang was 9.99 metres, above the danger point of nine metres while the level of the Kelantan River at the Guillemard bridge in Tanah Merah was 16.12 metres (danger point 16 metres), and the water level was rising.

All roads in the state remain passable, and the sky is overcast. Three people have drowned in the floods in Kelantan so far, two brothers aged 14 and 16 in Bachok and a two-year-old boy in Pasir Mas.
