Kedah victims suffered a loss of about RM177 million as a result of floods between 1988 and 2008, according to a study by the Northern Corridor Implementation Authority (NCIA).
Its chief executive Redza Rafiq said the loss was incurred by households in four flood incidences.
The amount does not include losses suffered by other parties or the economical and social impact on the community.
He said RM140 million of the total loss was incurred by households in Lembaga Kemajuan Pertanian Muda (Mada) area.
“The time has come for stakeholders to tackle the problem collectively so that the adverse impact on the lives of the community is minimised.
“Floods have become an annual phenomenon and its effects can reach tsunami level,” he cautioned, while delivering his keynote address at a flood management workshop at Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) here today.
On the workshop organised jointly by the UUM Nothern Corridor research centre, Universiti Malaysia Perlis and Kedah National Security Council, he said it was for participants to share ideas and contribute suggestions to find a practical solution to the perennial problem.
