NUEW and NUBE protest against Employment Act in Johor Baru

Discrimination against workers by employers is evident in the amendments made to the Employment Act of 1955, says Rizuan Zainal, secretary of the National Union of Electronic Workers. He was speaking at the recent union workers’ picket in Johor Bahru.

“A lot of benefits have been revoked from workers in the private sector through these amendments and at a severe cost to their rights.”

More than 150 members of 27 trade unions staged a demonstration in Kampung Pasir, Skudai, Johor Bahru recently.

Tan Eng Hong, Malaysian Trade Union Congress (MTUC) Johor Division chairman, and president of the National Union Of Bank Employees (NUBE) said they were protesting against two amendments to the Employment Act 1955: on overtime payment, and allowing companies to outsource labour from third parties rather than employing them directly.

They hope the Government will repeal the amendments that were passed on October 6.
