The Congress of Unions of Employees in the Public and Civil Services (Cuepacs) firmly opposes a statement by the opposition on reducing the number of civil servants, should they form the central government.
Describing it as obsolete, Cuepacs president Omar Osman said civil servants should not be made a target for political interests, but should instead, be appreciated for their contributions.
“We are disappointed that such a matter is made into a political issue as they should appreciate us.
“Leaders who want to rule the country should not stop the people from contributing towards the nation’s development. They shouldn’t be leaders if they cannot face the burden and risks,” he told reporters during a function at Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) today.
The DAP was recently reported as saying its (DAP’s) government would reduce civil servants and terminate those who were inefficient, such as that done in China, to reduce the government’s budget.
Omar said civil servants in Malaysia could not be likened to those in other countries, and that should there be such an implementation, it could create other problems such as unemployment and delayed implementation of government projects.
He said the existing 1.2 million civil servants was sufficient for the nation’s population of 30 million, but that their skills and knowledge needed to be improved for better job execution.
“I call on civil servants to reject this idea as it is a political issue. The opposition has run out of things to meddle with.
“We hope civil servants will not worry as they will be defended. We will work with civil servants in the country to contribute and support the prime minister and deputy prime minister who have brought much improvement for government employees,” he added.
