The Raja Muda of Perlis Tuanku Syed Faizuddin Putra Jamalullail has called upon the people of the state to prepare for the imminent floods by taking consistent and voluntary personal initiatives, both on the home-front and workplace.
Among the steps that can be taken, is for ditches and drains to be cleaned and kept free of garbage to enable water flow, he said in a statement yesterday.
“People should not build structures which can obstruct the flow of water and they should not throw rubbish into rivers, ditches and drains,” he emphasised.
Tuanku Syed Faizuddin encouraged people to collect rain water for recycling, which would indirectly reduce the volume of water running into waterways.
He also advised the public to contact the Department of Irrigation and Drainage and Kangar Municipal Council if they faced problems that could not be solved on their own.
The Meteorological Department has forecasted a shift in the North-East Monsoon bringing with it a bigger deluge of rainfall, starting this month.
Perlis, Kedah, Kelantan and Terengganu have been identified as states which will be affected by the floods this year.
