Sarawak lauds MOE decision on contract management

The Sarawak government has lauded the MOE’s decision to empower state directors of education in the management of contracts for educational projects.

The Sarawak government has lauded the Ministry of Education’s (MOE) decision to empower Sarawak and Sabah directors of education in the management of contracts for educational development projects.

Social Welfare, Women and Family Development Minister Fatimah Abdullah said that she was involved in meetings with the MOE on the matter and to determine projects that should be given priority.

“State education departments usuallly get direct input from the divisons and districts on the needs of schools in their areas as they know projects that should be given priority,” she told reporters yesterday.

Deputy Prime Minister and Education Minister Muhyiddin Yassin announced the MOE decision in Penampang, Sabah yesterday.

Previously, the Sarawak Education Department accepted projects implemented by MOE although there were other urgent needs like teachers quarters and classrooms.

Fatimah said with the decision, state education directors would find it easier to implement educational development projects according to priority and needs.

“A special committee should be formed to evaluate the performance of contractors and their ability to implement the projects well,” she added.

The projects should also be monitored by engineers from state education departments or the Public Works Department (PWD).
