The Ministry of Information Communication and Culture plans to implement a special programme on the appreciation of history, following attempts by some to confuse historical facts of the country, says its deputy minister, Maglin Denis D’Cruz.
He said the action of certain parties to dispute the history of the country could influence the younger generation and as such measures to combat such attempts was needed through the ministry’s departments and agencies.
“BERNAMA and RTM could take the lead role by having special slots on the appreciation of history,” he told reporters when attending a Caring Service Programme organised by the Perlis Department of Special Affairs (Jasa) at Simpang Empat near here today.
Through the programme, Maglin who was accompanied by Perlis Jasa director, Saiful Daniel Mohd Yusof visited and contributed cash and groceries to inmates of a old folks home.
Maglin was concerned that efforts to confuse the country’s history would erode the identity of the people of the country following differing perceptions of the actual historical background and historical views advocated by certain parties.
On the effectiveness of Jasa in carrying out activities for the community including the Caring Services Programme, he was confident the people would continue to accept Barisan Nasional (BN) as the party which should be given the mandate to rule the country in the coming general election.
Meanwhile, an inmate, Ab Rashid Dahaman, 58, was happy with the presence of Maglin and his delegation to the home in Kampung Sungai Baru.
Ab Rashid who is handicapped and blind said their presence proved the government was concerned with the people, including the disabled.
Another inmate Yeong Yok Lin, 72, who is blind said she was honoured with the attendance of the deputy minister and it showed the government practiced the spirit of 1Malaysia irrespective of race.
