The Federation of Malaysian Manufacturers (FMM) has called for a complete review of the education system to enable Malaysia to become a fully developed high income nation and to be globally competitive.
Its president, Mustafa Mansur, said such an exercise was long overdue as the last education review, known as the Rahman Talib Report, was published, 51 years ago.
That report was preceded by the Razak Report of 1956. “It is very important to take stock of the last education reports, how successful they had been and how well they were implemented.
“Since the last report, the objective and role of education have changed, in terms of their emphasis.
“We have had periodic changes to some aspects of education but these have been patchwork solutions, rather than holistic,” Mustafa, a
teacher-turned-industrialist, told reporters in a recent interview.
He said a review committee should be set up with representation from a cross-section of the society, including non-governmental organisations, economists, historians and even the man-in-the-street.
The committee should look into all issues, including enhancing knowledge and improving the standard of English in schools, he added.
“It would be fitting if the committee is chaired by Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak as it was his father who was the architect of the Razak Report,” he said.
