What the Coronation Square Mall will offer

First, the size. CapitaLand Investment puts the gross floor area at about 1.2 million sq ft. That would make it the biggest retail mall in the city centre.

Next, the mix. Plans point to dining, family attractions, wellness and other experiences, with trade running from day into night.

Then, the theme is “Where the World Meets Johor”. CapitaLand Investment Group Chief Strategy Officer Ervin Yeo said the mall will be a bridge for Singapore retailers. It will also bring in brands from the group’s global network.

Also, a marketplace grocer will anchor the mall. No name has been announced.

Meanwhile, at the groundbreaking, the Singapore Retailers Association and CapitaLand Investment signed an MoU. It aims to help Singapore retailers enter Johor Bahru, including through pilot pop-up stores.

Besides, the mall is one part of a RM5 billion project on 9.6 acres. The Star reports eight towers in all, including offices, a hotel and a residential block that is already sold.

How it links to Singapore

First, the RTS Link. An air-conditioned pedestrian bridge will connect the mall to the station. The RTS Link is due to start running in February 2027.

Next, the checkpoint. A separate walkway is planned to the Bangunan Sultan Iskandar customs and immigration complex, PropertyGuru reports.

Also, the plans include parking, with park-and-ride space for drivers.

Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi and Singapore’s Consul-General to Johor Bahru, Ng Kuan Khai, joined the groundbreaking.

Coronade Properties Managing Director Datuk Patrick Lim described the project as a city within a city.

It is also the first project to kick-start the 250-acre district, according to CapitaLand.

Together, these links connect the mall to both the station and the checkpoint.

The mall also sits in the Ibrahim International Business District, part of the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone. We have also covered the e-ART corridors planned for the city.

What is still unknown

First, the tenants. No retailer has been named, apart from the unnamed grocer.

Next, the opening date. Only the completion target of 2029 has been given, and construction was due to start in 2026.

Also, the plans do not say how many storeys the mall will have.

Then, the cost. The RM5 billion figure covers the whole project, and no separate figure has been given for the mall.

The Ascott hotel will be the brand’s first in Johor Bahru, the groundbreaking reports say.

The images released so far are artist’s impressions, so the final look may differ.

Meanwhile, shoppers have a newer option closer to the checkpoint. SKS City Mall JBCC opened on 1 May, about a five-minute drive away.

Coronation Square Mall will be a longer wait. We will update this story when tenants or an opening date are announced.
