Citizen Journalists Malaysia will be collaborating with regional NGO, Engagemedia in an initiative to address the migrant workers and stateless persons issue in Kota Kinabalu and Kuala Lumpur.
Following this, EngageMedia is looking for a highly organised, dynamic and creative individual to lead a citizen video initiative with migrant workers and stateless persons in Kota Kinabalu and Kuala Lumpur.
The Project
In partnership with Citizen Journalists Malaysia project, EngageMedia will run a series of 6 workshops in video production, distribution and security with Migrant Worker, Refugee and Stateless Persons (MRS) in Kuala Lumpur and Kota Kinabalu.
Additionally the position will take on an editorial and outreach role, collecting and curating MRS video content from Malaysia and the SE Asia region.
This content will be promoted to citizen and mainstream media outlets, as well as advocacy organisations, assisting them to employ it as a tool within their work.
The project builds on EngageMedia’s already existing migrant worker program. The position will oversee local coordinators in Kota Kinabalu and Jakarta who will assist with the project.
The project aims are to augment the advocacy and documentation capacity of migrant workers, stateless persons and their support organisations via the use of video, mobile and internet based media increase the exposure of migrant worker and stateless persons issues to Malaysian and international audiences so as expand public debate, expose abuses and improve conditions provide first hand stories to those contemplating migration so they can make better choices and protect their rights and increase the communication and possibility of collaboration between migrant workers of different cultures by ensuring the videos are available in a range of languages
The Position
This position is based in Kuala Lumpur, 4 days a
week for 12 months.
Roles and Responsibilities
Project Management and Training
Develop project plans and monitor progress ensuring projects stick to deadlines and meet goals
Monitor the project budget with the assistance of the Finance Coordinator
Coordinate workshops in video production, distribution, security and online engagement with support from EngageMedia trainers
Coordinate DVD, online and TV compilations
Assist with the development of screening and education packages to accompany content
Develop advisory groups and run focus group discussions
Editorial
Regularly gather, publish and curate videos, news and events on the EngageMedia.org website that relate to MRS issues
Be responsible for administering MRS issue content on EngageMedia.org, including providing user support
Work with the Lingua coordinator to get relevant video content translated and subtitled
Blog regularly about your work
Outreach and Partnerships
Develop partnerships with migrant worker organisations in Malaysia, Indonesia and throughout the region, assisting them to link video content to their advocacy work
Develop partnerships with media outlets, including TV stations, to make use of video materials
Attend film festivals and other events to gather content, network and present the work of EngageMedia
Promote EngageMedia work to social media spaces such as Facebook and Twitter

Selection Criteria
Fluent Bahasa Malaysia or Indonesia and advanced English;
Proven project management skills and examples of your ability to successfully coordinate teams to create successful projects;
Leadership and community building skills – ability to draw people together and move them toward common goals;
Exemplary written and verbal communications skills;
Video production and distribution skills;
Strong networks in the activist and non-profit sector in Southeast Asia;
Training and event management expertise;
Minimum 5 years experience in a related field;
Demonstrated knowledge of new media industry developments, technologies and audience trends;
An understanding of and commitment to the aims, objectives and values of EngageMedia.
Remuneration
$75-95 USD per day depending on experience and skill set.
Note that is a contract position and does not include holidays, sick pay, Ramadan bonus etc. This is compensated for by offering a higher overall day rate.
The position includes a monthly communications allowance and travel insurance.
