Public reaction to Vishwaroopam ban

Kamal Haasan’s controversial film ‘Vishwaroopam’ has been removed from local cinemas in Malaysia a day after its release following a directive from the home ministry, much to the disappointment of ethnic Indians here.

The ban came after members of Muslim organisations objected to the film on the ground that it portrays the community in bad light.

The film, which opened in Malaysia on Thursday (January 24th), had played to full cinemas before being removed from the theatres.

According to the owner of PG Odeon theatre Mariadass Gopal, the movie doesn’t have anything against Islam or muslims.

Even some of his muslim customers gave a positive response about the film.

“We shouldn’t kill the talent of an artist whom sacrificed his life in the film making industry”, he added.

He hopes the government will lift the ban as soon as possible.

‘Vishwaroopam’ has been banned Tamil Nadu for two weeks amid allegations by the Muslim community that they have been depicted negatively in the movie.

After a day-long court room drama that ended yesterday (January 29), the Madras high court lifted the ban imposed on Kamal Haasan’s film Vishwaroopam, paving the way for its release in Tamil Nadu.

In Malaysia, Vishwaroopam was suspended last Friday after cinemas began screening the movie.

Film Censorship Board’s (LPF) enforcement and control division secretary Razak Derahman told FMT that the screening of Viswaroopam was suspended on the orders of Home Minister Hishammuddin Hussein.

According to Razak, the Malaysian Indian Muslim Youth Movement sent a memorandum to the Home Ministry on Wednesday to oppose the screening of the movie that is alleged to hurt the religious sensitivities of Muslims.
