The police have begun scrutinising the closed-circuit television recordings
of two locations to nail the culprits behind recent acid splash incidents in
the city.
One of the cases involved a despatch rider who was splashed with liquid,
believed to be acid, at a petrol station in Sungai Besi before being robbed
of RM18,000 on July 26.
The other incident occurred beside a public toilet near Wisma Bumi Raya in
Jalan Raja Laut on Aug 8, where a 27-year-old man was splashed with liquid,
believed to be acid, by one of three youths.
Kuala Lumpur Criminal Investigation Department deputy chief Asst Comm Khairi
Ahrasa said however, the cases were not related to an earlier series of acid
splashing incidents.
“The liquids used in these cases are also different from those used in the
previous incidents. Investigations have also indicated that the
characteristics of the culprits were also dissimilar,” he said in a
statement in Kuala Lumpur today.
In the incident on July 26, the 35-year-old despatch rider had stopped at
the petrol station about 12.20pm to use the restroom and refuel his
motorcycle after cashing an RM18,000 company cheque.
At that juncture, Khairi said, a youth sporting a baseball cap splashed the
liquid at the victim’s face, snatched a bag containing RM18,000 from his
motorcycle compartment and escaped in a waiting Proton Wira.
The police found that the machine’s registration number, WLC 1475, was
false, he said, adding that they managed to obtain a photofit of the
suspect.
On the Aug 8 incident, the police chief said the victim was warded at the
Kuala Lumpur Hospital as a result of burns caused by liquid splashed at his
face by one of the three youths who escaped in a black Proton Wira
(Aeroback).
