Selangor spends RM5.73 million for urban poor

A total of RM5.73 million has been spent on Urban Poor Microcredit Scheme and Selangor Microcredit Scheme in the first seven months of 2011, according to Elizabeth Wong, the Selangor exco for tourism, consumer affairs and environment.

She said the schemes have benefited 2000 people under the third phase of the Selangor’s People-based Economic program (Merakyatkan Ekonomi Selangor, or MES).

Both schemes target urban dwellers with a monthly income lower than RM1500 a month or RM3000 with three children.

Urban Poor Microcredit Scheme offers RM5000 loan without interest, while Selangor Microcredit Scheme offers RM3000.

She told Petaling Jaya folks who took part in the Selangor budget dialogue today that the state wants to retain its position as the ideal state to live in.

Green building a key topic

Hence, she hoped the participants can contribute towards the stipulation of 2012 State Budget in accordance to the needs and wants of the local folks.

“This year topics include family uplift module, development of green building and renewable energy, human quality, information technology and quality of life index,” she said at MBPJ Civil Hall.

The participants were also asked to provide feedback concerning the agenda of the forth and fifth phases of MES program.

She said the MES programs recorded an expenditure of RM382 million since 2008, which includes Selangor Born Heritage Fund (TAWAS), Gift for University Child, Golden Age Friendly Scheme and Estate Workers’ Children Education Fund.
