Terengganu looking into high infant death rate

The Terengganu government has directed the National Population and Family Development Board to identify the reasons for the state’s high infant mortality rate of 9.2 per 1,000 live births.

The Terengganu government has directed the National Population and Family Development Board to identify the reasons for the state’s high infant mortality rate of 9.2 per 1,000 live births.

The board’s director-general, Aminah Rahman, said today the rate was higher than the national average of 6.3 per 1,000 live births.

“Melaka has the next highest rate, at 8.4, followed by Kelantan and Perlis, at 8.1,” she told reporters after a briefing for Terengganu Menteri Besar Ahmad Said and state executive councillors.

Aminah said one of the factors could be the higher frequency of births in Terengganu because the state had a high fertility rate of 3.3 children per woman compared to the national average of 2.3.
