The mobile team set up by the Sarawak Immigration Department for the legal foreign workers biometric registration
exercise is extending its coverage this week.
The Department’s deputy director, Ahmad Khazali Mat Desa said since the programme was launched on August 1, the number of legal foreign workers registered by the mobile unit was far higher than those at stationary registration centres.
“Last week the mobile team recorded 75 per cent of the total legal foreign workers registered at 26,855 as compared to the 29 static centres which recorded only 8,935 workers,” he said in a statement yesterday.
Ahmad said to assist in the launching of more mobile teams, employers in Sarawak are advised to contact immigration offices in major towns in the state so that follow up action could be taken by the mobile team.
Ahmad said overall, the programme launched on Aug 1 received positive response with 35,780 workers registered by 1,080 employers.
He said the plantation and agricultural sector recorded the highest registration at 15,386 foreign workers by 344 employers followed by the manufacturing sector at 13,962 workers by 283 employers.
He said the service sector recorded 3,618 workers engaged by 306 employers and the construction sector has 2,824 workers from 147 employers.
“Miri has the highest registration at the moment with 11,205 workers by 311 employers followed by Bintulu with 9,731 workers by 152 employers and Kuching and Sibu respectively with 5,864 and 5,706 workers,” he said.
“The lowest were recorded in Limbang and Lawas respectively at 103 and 452 workers,” he added.
