Members of the public have been invited to witness the grand official opening of the Kiwanis Careheart Centre at Taman Sutera Utama, Johor Bahru on 10 November. The event will include the official openings of several of the facilities at the centre in addition to the opening of the main building. The announcement was made at a press conference held on 29 October to publicise the upcoming event.
The word “Kiwanis” stems from an American Indian phrase which, roughly translated, means “to express one self”. The centre which was completed about two years ago, can accommodate 120 youths who will be able to learn skills ranging from planting vegetables and growing fresh mushroom and also social skills.
Kiwanis is a global organization of volunteers dedicated to changing the world one child and one community at a time.The first Kiwanis club was organised in Detroit, Michigan , USA in 1915.Today, there are 9,000 Kiwanis clubs active in 90 countries throughout the world. The first club in Malaysia was founded in 1976 and today, there are 62 Kiwanis clubs.
Mr Chang Meng Kiat, one of the two guests-of-honour at the opening, included this poignant quotation in his message in the souvenir programme prepared for the big day.
“O, my fellow friends, let’s join in the great act in body and soul. With your knowledge and resources, share it with the needy. With your generosity, I believe that the centre will also help the other small centre to grow. By giving, you will receive happiness. The Almighty will bless you with your action.”
