Cleaner Greener Penang important, says Raveentharan

A Cleaner Greener Penang programme was held at the Taman Bukit Jambul flats in Bayan Baru this morning.

Sixty people comprising of two state assemblymen, 3 councillors, 5 JKKK chairpersons from surrounding areas together with volunteers conducted an awareness campaign cum survey to explain and find out how much the residents understood the government policies on the environment.

The team visited 1200 households in the area. According to survey results, more than 90% of the residents were happy and supported the government’s initiative of going without plastic bags.

Each of the household that participated in the survey was given a woven bag together with a “Cleaner Greener Penang” towel. Lucky draw for hampers were provided for residents who joined the VIPs for lunch at the Sungai Nibong Kecil  JKKK compound.

S.Raveentharan, the state assemblyman for Batu Uban and Sim Tze Tzin, the state assemblyman for Pantai Jerejak personally went about to meet the residents together with MPPP councillors Tan Seng Keat, Mohd Rashid bin Hasnon and Muhammad Sabri bin Mohd Osman.

The five JKKK chairpersons present were Santha Muthu (Taman Brown), Dr. Mydin (Sg. Nibong Kecil), Othman bin Nordin (Batu Uban), Mohd Ismail bin Ibrahim Sa (Lip Sin) and Ishak bin Mat (Sg. Dua).

“We strongly urge the people not to use the plastic bag and to use the recyclable bag instead,” said Sim, pointing out to the residents that they could make use of the free woven bag when they go shopping.

Meanwhile S.Raveentharan complained that he was slapped with an ex parte order instead of being served the notice even though he has two offices and lives in Penang. He also reiterated that being clean was important and that was why the Cleaner Greener Penang programme was conducted intensively statewide.

“Bersih itu mustahak, jalan mesti bersih, longkang mesti bersih” he said.
