The Federal Agriculture Marketing Authority (Fama) has, todate, established 29 farmers’ markets in Negeri Sembilan and has recorded a turnover of RM77.6 million in the last five years.
Chairman, Negeri Sembilan Agriculture, Agro-based Industries, Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Action Committee Yunus Rahmat said of the 29, six were mega farmers’ markets located in Ampangan, Paroi Jaya, Kuala Pilah, Batu Kikir, Rembau and Jempol.
“The sales turnover of RM77.6 million is a huge figure and goes to show the importance of this programme and its impact on the nation’s economic development.
“Turnover in the first four months of this year stood at RM7.1 million andis expected to rise to about RM21.3 million by year-end from RM17.9 million recorded last year,” he told today.
Yunus was optimistic by the end of the Tenth Malaysia Plan, there would be 40 farmers’ markets in the state involving 2,000 entrepreneurs.
Under the farmers’ market entrepreneurship programme, there are six agro-bazaars, 12 farmers’ market caravans, 15 fruit stalls and 16 mobile units.
Farmers’ markets are popular as they are situated in strategic sites and sell market produce which is competitively priced, fresh and of high-quality.
