The Johor Women’s League (Jewel) recently celebrated the International Women’s Day 2014 graced by Raja Zarith Sofiah Sultan Idris Shah, the consort of the Sultan of Johor,
In line with this year’s official United Nation’s theme for International Women’s Day, “Equality for Women is Progress for All,” Jewel invited Datin Paduka Marina Mahathir to speak on addressing women’s issues in the country.
Speaking at the high tea, Marina inspired nearly 300 guests who attended the event with her talk that covered women’s issues, including subjects like the threat of sexual and physical violence, girls’ education opportunities, women’s health and child mortality, high divorce rates, child marriages and child abuse cases.
She said Malaysia is the first Muslim country in the world to have a Domestic Violence Act and women who have been suffering in silence now have the right to seek help.
Jewel president Thanam Visvanathan-Suresh said the association has actively engaged with youth to educate them on their rights.
Jewel is a non-governmental, non-profit Society of women volunteers dedicated to advancing the status of women and children.
