Four members of a family comprising a husband and wife, their daughter and granddaughter were killed when the car they were in crashed onto a road divider at Km73 of Jalan Ipoh-Gerik, near Kuala Kangsar, yesterday.
The couple’s other granddaughter sustained critical injuries during the 2.15pm incident.
State traffic police chief Supt Wan Abdullah Ishak said those killed in the accident were its driver, Zainuddin Abas, 69; his wife Azizah Mahmod, 69; daughter Zalinda, 33, and granddaughter Aishah Sufian Afendi, 7.
Aishah’s three-year-old sister, Sarah Sufian Afendi, was sent to the Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital (HRPB) here for treatment, he told reporters when contacted today.
Wan Abdullah said the family was heading home to Taman Sultan Yusof, Kuala Kangsar, from Gerik when Zainuddin lost control of the car before it skidded and rammed onto the road divider.
“As a result, the steel road divider protruded into the windscreen and killed the four victims on the spot,” he said.
A team from the fire and rescue department was deployed to the scene to extricate the bodies before they were rushed to the hospital, said Wan Abdullah.
He added that a post-mortem was conducted on the victims at the Kuala Kangsar Hospital and their bodies were claimed by family members in the evening.
