The Magistrate’s Court yesterday ordered a teenager to do 150 hours of community service after he pleaded guilty to be in possession of a knife in a public place.
Magistrate Melissa Chia handed down the sentence on Mardin Jumaadi, 18, who was charged with having the 15.24cm knife, which was wrapped in a black plastic sheet, in front of a shop at Jalan Stephen, about 1pm last June 2.
Mardin, who claimed to carry the knife for self-protection, was charged under Section 7(1)(a) of the Corrosive and Explosive Substances and Offensive Weapons Act 1958, which carries a maximum jail of two years and is liable to
whipping, upon conviction.
