MIRI – “Special preventive measures”, including banishing of suspects, will be taken to stop secret society activities, Miri police chief ACP Jamaludin Ibrahim said yesterday. He said the law provided for police to take such action against individuals who threaten public order without having to prosecute them in court.
“We have taken these measures before and we will take them again if necessary,” he told reporters here in response to allegations that a gang had been extorting “protection money” from owners of business premises in the city. Although police have not received any report of any extortion, Jamaludin promised to investigate the allegations.
In another development, Jamaludin said that police were looking for five men to help their investigation of a recent fight at an entertainment centre where a businessman was seriously injured.
