KUALA LUMPUR – In a bid to be more efficient and competitive, plans are afoot for Radio Televisyen Malaysia (RTM) to be corporatised, with a section of its service probably privatised, according to Information Communication and Culture Minister Dr Rais Yatim.

He said the proposal for the restructuring of RTM, in preparation for full digital broadcasting by 2015, has been submitted to the National Economic Council. “As a leading broadcaster in the country, RTM should undergo a metamorphosis or change to make it more competent in discharging its duty to the nation while satisfying its viewers, the people,” he said.

Dr Rais spoke to reporters after opening the RTM Transformation Retreat at the Cendekiawan Hall of the Tun Abdul Razak Institute of Broadcasting and Information at Angkasapuri here. The two-day retreat is aimed at identifying more effective measures to re-engineer content and determine better marketing and promotion methods to raise programme ratings and revenue.
