Raja Nong Chik: Go ahead for KL hillside projects despite landslide

KUALA LUMPUR – There are no plans to stop hillside developments in the city, notwithstanding the recent landslide in Hulu Langat. The government will not intervene so long as landowners and developers observe the technical guidelines on such development, projects will continue, according to Federal Territories and Urban Wellbeing Minister, Datuk Raja Nong Chik Raja Zainal Abidin.

He said the guidelines, issued last year, were based on best practices for hillside developments, which have been adopted by various countries, including Hong Kong, and has been proven to be effective.

“We at not saying the guidelines are foolproof,” he told reports, “But if the stakeholders adhere to these and with monitoring by the authorities like Kuala Lumnpur City Hall, the risks are minimised,” he said after opening Bukit Bandaraya’s community centre in Jalan Medang Tanduk, Damansara recently.

His response was in relation to the status of development in hilly areas in Kuala Lumpur in the wake of the recent landslide tragedy at the Hidayah Madrasah Al-Taqwa orphanage in Hulu Langat, which claimed 16 lives, mainly children. Also present at the event was Kuala Lumpur, Mayor Datuk Seri Ahmad Fuad Ismail.

On other issues, Raja Nong Chik announced that the ministry has allocated RM4.25 million for the upkeep of 11 community centres, 20 community halls, four stadiums, 27 football fields, 32 badminton courts, 13 gymnasiums and 17 futsalcourts in the city.
